Instagram sizes

Instagram picture and video sizes, in plain words

When a scheduling tool posts to Instagram for you, Instagram checks the picture or video against its own rules at the last step. A picture that is too tall or in the wrong file type is refused, and a post you planned for tomorrow morning does not go out. These are the limits Meta publishes for tools like Vusely, and what Vusely does so you don't run into them.

What you can do

  • Feed pictures

A feed picture must be a JPEG, up to 8 MB, with a shape between 4:5 (tall) and 1.91:1 (wide). Instagram scales the width to between 320 and 1,440 pixels, so a 4:5 picture 1,080 pixels wide is a safe choice.

  • Reels

A reel is an MP4 or MOV from 3 seconds to 15 minutes, up to 300 MB and up to 1,920 pixels wide. Instagram recommends 9:16 (upright) to avoid cropping or empty space.

  • Stories

A story picture is a JPEG up to 8 MB, and 9:16 is recommended. A story video can be up to 60 seconds and 100 MB. Stories disappear after 24 hours.

  • Carousels

Meta's publishing connection allows a carousel of up to 20 pictures or videos. Vusely currently makes carousels of up to 10 pictures.

How it works

  1. 1

    Pick your picture

Use a photo from your phone, your library, or one Mia made. It does not need to be cropped first.

  2. 2

    See the note

If the picture is outside Instagram's shape, the post form says so before you save, in plain words.

  3. 3

    Post as usual

Vusely sends Instagram a copy that fits. Your original, and what other accounts get, stay exactly as they were.

What Instagram sizes accepts

Vusely checks every post against these limits before it is saved.

  • Captions up to 2,200 characters
  • Up to 30 hashtags
  • A photo or video is needed
  • Photos and video can be scheduled

What Vusely does when a picture doesn't fit

A picture outside 4:5 to 1.91:1, such as a phone screenshot or a tall portrait, is shown whole on a soft, blurred copy of itself, so nothing is cut off. A PNG or WebP picture is turned into a JPEG, because Instagram's publishing connection takes only JPEG. A video wider than 1,920 pixels gets a heads-up in the post form, because Instagram may refuse it.

These limits come from Meta's developer documentation for publishing to Instagram, last checked in October 2026. Instagram's own app can be more forgiving than the connection other tools use, which is why a picture that posts fine from your phone can still fail through a scheduler.

Questions, answered

What is the best size for an Instagram feed picture?

Any shape from 4:5 (tall) to 1.91:1 (wide) works. A 4:5 picture, 1,080 pixels wide, is a good default because it takes the most room in the feed without being cropped.

Can I schedule a PNG to Instagram?

Instagram's publishing connection accepts only JPEG. With Vusely you can add a PNG: it is turned into a JPEG for Instagram, and your original is kept.

My iPhone photos are 3:4. Will they fit?

3:4 is slightly taller than Instagram's 4:5 limit, so Vusely sends Instagram a copy with thin soft bars at the sides and the whole photo showing.

What happens to the picture on my other accounts?

Nothing. The made-to-fit copy is for Instagram only. Facebook, Threads and your other accounts get your original picture.
